Free Online Conception Calculator

Estimate the date of conception and the window of intercourse that led to your pregnancy. By entering your baby's estimated due date, this accurate conception calculator works backward using standard gestational timelines in US Imperial and UK/EU Metric units, drawing on guidelines from the CDC, NHS, and WHO.

How the Conception Date is Calculated

Medical professionals date pregnancy based on two primary timelines: Gestational Age (measured from the first day of the last menstrual period, LMP) and Fertilization Age (measured from the actual date of conception).

Typically, human gestation lasts approximately 280 days (40 weeks) from the LMP, or 266 days (38 weeks) from the actual date of conception. Using these standards, we back-calculate as follows:

Conception Date = Due Date - 266 days
Intercourse Window = Conception Date - 5 days to Conception Date + 1 day
Estimated Last Period Start = Due Date - 280 days - (Cycle Length - 28) days

Adjusting for cycle length is crucial because the standard 280-day timeline assumes a perfect 28-day cycle with ovulation occurring on Day 14. If a woman has a 35-day cycle, ovulation (and therefore conception) occurred approximately 7 days later in the cycle than standard, which is why we subtract (Cycle Length - 28) days.

Gestational Age (LMP) vs. Fertilization Age (Conception)

It can be confusing to hear that you are "4 weeks pregnant" when you only conceived 2 weeks ago. Here is why this discrepancy exists:

Gestational Age (Used by Obstetricians)

Since it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact day a sperm fertilized an egg, doctors date pregnancies starting from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). By this definition, you are considered "pregnant" for about two weeks before the egg is even fertilized. This scale is standard because the start of a period is an easily observable event.

Fertilization Age (True Embryonic Age)

This is the actual age of the developing baby, starting from the day of conception (fertilization). This typically occurs within 24 hours of ovulation. The fertilization age is always about 2 weeks shorter than the gestational age.

Due Date vs. Probable Conception Reference Table

Below is a quick reference table showing the corresponding estimated conception dates and intercourse windows for typical due dates throughout the year, assuming a standard 28-day cycle:

March 15 June 22 (Previous Year) June 17 – June 23 June 8 (Previous Year)
May 15 August 22 (Previous Year) August 17 – August 23 August 8 (Previous Year)
July 15 October 22 (Previous Year) October 17 – October 23 October 8 (Previous Year)
September 15 December 23 (Previous Year) December 18 – December 24 December 9 (Previous Year)

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is a free online conception calculator?

A free online conception calculator back-calculates your probable date of conception by subtracting 266 days (38 weeks) from your estimated due date (EDD), or adjusting from your LMP. While this provides a highly accurate statistical estimate, the exact day of fertilization is rarely known unless conceived via IVF.

Does conception occur on the same day as intercourse?

Not necessarily. Conception (fertilization) occurs when a sperm meets an egg, typically within 24 hours of ovulation. However, since sperm can survive inside the uterus for up to 5 days, intercourse that occurred days before ovulation can lead to conception. The intercourse window is therefore broader than the conception date.

How do cycle length variations affect the estimated date of last period (LMP)?

When back-calculating from a due date, the standard model assumes a 28-day cycle. If your pre-pregnancy cycle was longer or shorter, the date your last period actually started differs. Our accurate calculator adjusts for this variation, ensuring precise timelines in both US Imperial and UK/EU Metric formats.

Can early ultrasound scans change my estimated conception date?

Yes. If an early dating scan (typically performed between 10 and 14 weeks) adjusts your estimated due date, you should input the new EDD into the calculator. Ultrasounds in the first trimester are considered the most accurate clinical method for estimating fetal age and conception parameters.
